According to foreign news on October 9, four people directly involved in the pricing negotiations said that the aluminum premium for shipment to Japanese buyers in the October-December quarter was set at $175 per ton, up 1.7% from the previous quarter, reflecting the higher premium in Europe. This offer is higher than the $172 per ton in the July-September quarter, and has risen for the third consecutive quarter. However, the offer is lower than the $180-185 per ton level initially proposed by global producers. Japan is a major aluminum importer, and the premium that the country agrees to pay for raw aluminum each quarter over the London Metal Exchange (LME) spot price sets the benchmark for Asia.
